Fieldwork
Kabul

Specialist Operations returned from a field expedition in Afghanistan. Its aim was to explore the ground prior to the initiation of a potential journey. The findings were encouraging strengthening the impressions and affirmed the potentials
for travelling Afghanistan as the relevance of doing so.

The urban development of Kabul has been explosive over the last decade. The capital harbours approximately 5 million people from just over 500.000 ten years ago. As a result the spectacular hilltops surrounding the city are densely populated by the new arrivals, seeking the relative security provided by the state or the economic opportunities often associated with rural to urban migration. The image shows the development at the very outskirts of Kabul. The urban development of this fast northern region of the city is characterized by the land position held by Marshall Fahim, the Afghan military commander, politician, and the first Vice President since November 2009.
